IAJHSC News

Remember that one of the required honor points is an article on a special activity or event which your council really liked or found successful. This activity can be a fund-raiser, school spirit, academic recognition, assembly, social activity, or community service. This article should be written by a student member. We will include the News from our Member Schools at the same intervals that Contact is published.

Remember that member advisors are also invited to submit articles on selected topics for an additional honor point. These Contact submissions are to be sent to Bruce A. Small, IAJHSC Executive Director, via e-mail. Submissions to the web site should also be sent directly to Bruce Small at ExecutiveDirector@iajhsc.org.

WEBSITE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The required student written articles that are submitted for your Honor Council Award will be used either in Contact or on the Website or perhaps in both places. All articles should be submitted to Webmaster@IAJHSC.org.

This year we would like to try to share project and activity ideas with our membership earlier so that they can be used by those who may need a new activity. In particular, if you have a seasonal activity that would make a good project for one of our members, please submit an article about it well in advance of the actual holiday. In that way, it can be publicized so that another school can use it for the upcoming holiday and enjoy the success with it that your school has enjoyed.

Remember that in order to qualify for the IAJHSC Honor Council Award, you must submit this required, student written article. You may also get another Honor Council point for responding to one or more of the Advisors’ Forum questions. Four questions for advisors’ response can be found in the article at the top of this page.

Please read this section very carefully. It is new and needs to have your closest attention and fullest understanding. If you provide any photos with your article, the IAJHSC assumes that you have secured the proper permission for the photograph to be used either on the website or in Contact. The IAJHSC assumes absolutely no responsibility or liability for any photos used in any of its publications.

Galena Middle School Goes Turkey Hunting

Look out, turkeys, 'cause here we come! One of the most favorite holiday activities for the Galena Middle School Student Council is an activity we call the Turkey Hunt. It is a community service project that we do every year in order to help out the local food pantry during the holiday season. At this time of year, they really need many food donations.

Just before the Thanksgiving break we announce that we will be having the annual Turkey Hunt. On the day of the Turkey Hunt, students and faculty members bring in canned food, cake mixes, paper towels, toothbrushes, and other such items to donate to the Galena Food Pantry. For each item they bring to donate, they receive a numbered ticket. They may bring more than four items, but can only receive a maximum of four tickets in the Turkey Hunt.

Gobble, gobble!Throughout the day ticket numbers are announced over the PA system during the passing time in between classes. If you have one of the announced numbers, you report to the office and receive a prize. Student Council purchases the prizes using money from the treasury. Prizes range from bags of candy and fruit snacks to two liter bottles of pop and boxes of snack cakes. The final prize of the day is a frozen Butterball turkey. One lucky winner gets the frozen turkey to take home just in time for Thanksgiving.

The prizes cost Student Council about $125. The project usually raises at least 700 or more items that can be donated to the food pantry. This is one of the most fun community service projects that we do, and it is greatly appreciated by the people at the pantry because they need so many donations at this time of the year.
