From the Governor’s proclamation of middle level leadership week to the spectacular performance and messages of Mr. Keith Hawkins and MWAH!, the 50th annual IAJHSC state convention was truly a golden event!  The 925 students and advisors in attendance had the opportunity to rekindle friendships, exchange ideas, and reignite their commitment to middle level student leadership in the State of Illinois.

A nearly perfectly executed convention by the eight 2008 – 2009 district representatives followed the IAJHSC state theme of “Achieve the Gold Medal of Leadership” to the fullest.  Nine large medals carrying the district representatives’ message of leadership and nine Olympic style torches set the stage for the amazing event.  Keynote speaker Keith Hawkins inspired and challenged the audience to continue to develop their leadership skills and to recognize the “heroes” in their lives.  MWAH! took the stage to deliver their messages of hope and inspiration through their skits, songs, and dances.  It was truly outstanding in every way.

District caucus meetings recognized 39 Honor Council recipients, four of whom were first time award winners this year.  Elections for 2009 – 2010 district representatives and adult directors were also held.  All convention delegates completed their effort to “Achieve the Gold Medal of Leadership” by receiving an embroidered IAJHSC lanyard with a gold medal bearing the IAJHSC official seal clipped to it.  Once again the Hall of Ideas showed the best projects from around the state so that all delegates could take home lots of new ideas to use.

Convention 2009 was truly an event to remember.  Everyone is looking forward to the 51st annual convention which will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield on April 16 – 17, 2010.
