Feeding Illinois Chosen as the
2015-16 IAJHSC State Service Project
By Erin Gillen
IAJHSC Northeast District Rep
Imagine not being able to enjoy a healthy meal on a daily basis. For at least 643,040 children in Illinois that is the reality. These children are considered food insecure which means that they have limited or uncertain access to adequate food for an active, healthy lifestyle. Feeding Illinois' mission is to coordinate and support the efforts of member food banks serving Illinois, enabling them to better provide a healthy and adequate food supply for those in need. We hope you're already making plans to attend the 2016 IAJHSC State Convention at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Springfield! It's an incredible, fast-paced 24-hour event filled with networking, idea sharing, leadership training, inspiration, recognition and fun—it's also a showcase of leadership and projects by IAJHSC member schools from across the state.
This year will feature two outstanding, nationally-known speakers: Harriet Turk and Ted Wiese.
Ms. Harriet Turk believes that we can do great things when we are willing to be true to ourselves. But, she says, living an "authentic" life can be tough. Too often we try to fit within prescribed molds, and in turn, we never uncover our unique gifts. This method works for awhile, but to truly be happy we must take off our invisible costumes and GET REAL.

We all have challenges in our lives, but Mr. Ted Wiese helps us see how we can be the SOLUTION, rather than just a part of the problem. Through engaging stories, humor, and audience participation, he guides his audiences through taking action, turning failures into stepping stones for success, accepting personal responsibility for our choices, and the power of making a positive differences in the lives of others.

Now that the New Year has begun and you are back in session at school, it is time to begin planning the rest of your student council activities for the remainder of the school year. Don’t forget to check the calendar here on the website to see what activities are coming up for you and your council. Fall workshops are done; mid-year workshops are scheduled. Be sure to attend the workshop in your district to claim your Honor Point for the Honor Council Award.
State convention is on the horizon! Scheduled for April 15 – 16, 2016, the 57th Annual IAJHSC State Convention will once again be held at the beautiful Crowne Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield, Illinois. The cost per delegate for this event is $100. Our Friday keynote speaker is Ms. Harriet Turk, a nationally recognized youth motivational speaker. Saturday’s keynote and lunch rotation sessions will feature Mr. Ted Wiese, one of America’s best youth leadership development speakers. This will be an event you will not want to miss! All forms concerning the convention will be online here beginning on February 1, 2016. The Honor Council Application form is already online!
Hotel reservations can now be made at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and the Holiday Inn Express next door. You must call Darlene Sidwell at 217-585-2871 to make your room reservations at either hotel. Leave her a message if you do not talk to her directly. She is excellent at returning calls. Darlene is incredible at making sure all our convention reservations are done correctly. To be sure you are aware … The Crowne Plaza has redone all of its rooms. They are now essentially all king rooms with a queen-sized pullout sofa bed. All will sleep four people comfortably. Due to the redesign, roll-away beds cannot fit into the rooms and meet the safety regulations for the occupants. The Holiday Inn Express also did some remodeling. Their rooms feature two queen-sized beds in each room; again, each will sleep four people comfortably with no room for a roll-away. Be sure to make your reservations early and reserve only the exact number of rooms you need. Prices at each hotel are exactly the same as last year. Remember … If you choose to go to a non-convention hotel, we run the risk of not fulfilling our contract block which will cause our expenses to skyrocket. You may save a few dollars now, but you will end up having to pay higher registration costs in the coming years!
One final reminder … If you have not paid your 2016 dues, you will not be given the new password for the Members’ Area of the website. All convention information will be posted there on February 1st. Dues are to be paid by December 31st of each year with a one month courtesy extension allowed. Therefore, your 2015 membership expires on January 31, 2016, if you have not submitted your annual dues to the Executive Treasurer, Mrs. Joann Murphy.
Let’s continue to … “Stir Up Some Leadership!”
