Let It Be Us Selected as the 2017 IAJHSC State Service Project

Let It Be Us

By Jayne Lynde
IAJHSC Northwest District Rep

As elected representatives of the IAJHSC we’ve challenged ourselves and our members to create their own stories.  This State Service Project gives all of us the opportunity to help others create their own happy stories.  The children in the Illinois foster care system could really use our help.  There are approximately 400,000 children in foster care in the United States.  In Illinois, there are about 18,000 children in the system.  Imagine the look on a foster child’s face when they hear they are going to have a forever family!  This is the happy ending they want, and this is the happy ending they deserve.

Let It Be Us is a charity dedicated to the adoption and education of children in Illinois foster care.  This charity builds bridges between foster children and potential adoptive parents.  They provide many programs to help achieve their primary goal of finding forever families.  Let It Be Us is the first non-profit of it’s kind in Illinois.  Their Summer Camp program is new and has a lot of room for growth.  We can be a part of their ground breaking work by supporting their Summer Camp Program.  Let It Be Us intends to send children to a special camp exclusively for children in Illinois foster care. These camp experiences change lives! Many of the children in foster care have never been able attend a summer camp - either sleep away or day camp- and we can help change that! We can help provide scholarships and overnight camp supplies to Illinois children in foster care. There are many benefits of this charity and donating money to their cause helps Illinois foster children add a new chapter to their life stories.

Happy New Year!!

January 5th, 2017  |  Posted by admin

Happy New Year to all.  I hope 2017 will see nothing but your best as you work to create fantastic stories of your deeds and accomplishments.  Remember … “Leaders Create Their Own Story!”

Just as you have finished the countdown to a new year, it is time to begin another countdown!  The 58th Annual IAJHSC State Convention is only about 3 and a half months away!  It’s time to start planning to attend.  Once again, the convention will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield, Illinois, and the registration fee is $100 per person.  The dates for this tremendous learning opportunity are April 21 – 22, 2017.  Our keynote speaker for the event is Mr. Patrick Maurer, a nationally known student leadership motivational speaker.  You can learn more about him at his website … pmaurer.com.

One of the most important things to get done for convention is to make your hotel reservations.  The official convention hotels are the Crowne Plaza and the next door Holiday Inn Express.  The per room cost at the Crowne is $139 + 12% tax.  The Holiday Inn cost is $128 +12% tax.  These are the same as last year because of our multi-year contract with them.  Please be sure to use one of these hotels so that we can fulfill our contract and keep convention costs as low as possible.

When you make your reservations for rooms, please don’t overbook!  This prevents other schools from getting rooms and then affects our room count when you cancel rooms at the last minute.  Reservations are restricted this year.  This means you must contact Darlene Sidwell at the Crowne in order to make your reservations.  You cannot make them through any other resource for our convention.  Her direct office number is 217-585-2871.  She is available Monday through Friday from 8:00am until 4:00pm.  If she is not there, leave her a voice message.  Darlene is absolutely excellent at returning your calls and getting your reservations made!  All the rooms will sleep four people comfortably whether they are doubles or king rooms with sofa beds.

Don’t forget to send your 2017 dues to our Executive Treasurer, Mrs. Joann Murphy.  Your membership expired on January 1st if you did not renew before the end of last year.  You have a grace period until January 31st to get that renewal done!  After that time, membership services will be discontinued.  Most importantly, the Members Area password changes on February 1st which is also the time all the convention information and registration materials are posted in that area of our website.

Again, I wish you the best of the new year.  Don’t forget to check the calendar for mid-year leadership workshops in your district, or better yet – step up and host one at your school!

See you at convention in April!!
